The Chess Tutors Taste of Chess battle of the minds competition is an opportunity for students throughout the community to test and measure their developing chess skills in full fledged round robin tournament play. The primary purpose of this tournament is to promote intellectual development and to give children a taste of just how much fun and invigorating critical thinking can be.
Students will have an opportunity to participate in a healthy competition that fosters camaraderie, provides valuable chess experience and encourages good sportsmanship. Limited spaces available. Early registration is the best way to secure your child’s participation.
This section of the tournament is RESERVED FOR STUDENTS 12 and UNDER who have yet to receive a USCF rating. No rated students will be permitted to compete in this section. (See below for our “Age 13 & Above” section which welcomes rated participants)
For the soul purpose of promoting education & mental wellness College scholarships will be awarded to the 1st & 2nd place winners. Magnificent hand-careved wooden trophies will also be awarded to our top finishers.

The aim of this event is to give children and adults alike a “Taste of Chess." Sign up for our 13 and over One Game Eliminator "Battle of the Minds MEGA CHESS Tournament." This event is fun for the entire family.
You will have the opportunity to match wits with complete strangers in the middle of Crenshaw Blvd on a GIANT chess board with 5 foot tall chess pieces in a head to head MEGA CHESS Battle of the Minds One Game Eliminator.
HOW COOL IS THIS?
Whatever the outcome, YOU’LL WIN! You'll have an exciting story to tell, a valuable new experience to treasure and—
if you manage to defeat your opponent—a precious and unforgettable moment in the sun! 
Either way, you won't go home empty handed.
Additionally, all participants will be given a parting memento—a Taste of Chess to remember.
GAME TIME INSTRUCTIONS: For this section you can register above as well. Type in 13/up in the sign in area above where it ask the question is your child rated (that is in addition to your rating if you have one). The first two to register will be the first two to play etc.
This Tournament will begin at 2pm. Players will receive 5 minutes each.
One game elimination.
COME ONE, COME ALL!
You must win every game to advance in the competition. Once you lose a game, you are immediately eliminated. No one may continue in the competition after a loss.
The player with the most victories by the time the clock strikes 5pm will be delared the winner.
NOTE: We reserve the right to extend the competition for up to one hour, should a significant need arise.
While playing speed chess we encourage you to stay focused. Unlike traditional chess there are
four ways to win and lose:
1.) Checkmate 2.) Capture the King 3.) Time expiration, 4.) Resignation ~
Should you win at least two or three games, you might want to stick around.

MEGA CHESS!
We believe that “Effort creates aptitude.” To encourage our youthful participants towards fulfilling their potential, they will all receive a gift just for making the effort.
